MASTER AT WORK

"Fashion today is all about the product. With all the pre-collections and the shows that are just marketing exercises, it has turned into a system. For an old romantic like me, this is hurting a little bit. That’s why I try to do things my way. I like to have happy people around me, and it’s for these people that I create my collections. Fashion should never be too dark or too gloomy: it should evoke feelings of joy. I believe in clothes as tools for self-expression. The biggest compliment is if I see someone on the street wearing something I have created in a way I would never have imagined. Clothes should always tell something of the person that wears them – and very little of the designer who made them." - Dries Van Noten

PART ONE: DIGITAL

Spent three days in Palm Springs for an intended relaxing post-finals vacation. Unfortunately, neither my boyfriend nor myself are very good at "relaxing". Sitting by the pool and lounging in the sun isn't really what we excel at. I think we spent about an hour in the pool total, and instead kept ourselves busy exploring Joshua Tree. The most surreal landscape I've ever seen. Like something belonging to a whole other planet.

GIFT-GIVING

( Acne and Isabel Marant knit sweaters, Doug Johnston microbasket, Clyde hat and mittens, Kaikado tea container, Prismatic Print Shop astrology calendar, Voluspa candle in Baltic Amber and Illume Boulangerie candle in Vanilla and Fig, Isaac Reina wallet, Strathcona stockings, Kaico kettle, Moderato cup and saucer, Moleskine weekly planner )

Things to give and receive this time of year. Emphasis on cozy sweaters, tea, and candles.

IN PROGRESS

Even though I'm taking a relatively manageable course load this term and finals week is turning out to be completely harmless, it's still difficult to remain actively creative when most of your time is tied up in reading articles, doing fieldwork and learning a new language. As much as I love school, I miss making things, so recently I picked up an old knitting project just to keep from feeling creatively stagnant. I think I started this scarf back in March, but had only made a couple inches worth of progress. The best thing about knitting is that I can put a project down and pick it up again whenever my hands get antsy.

ATSUSHI WADA

Interesting and quite frankly, somewhat unsettling short films by Atsushi Wada.

LOW PONY

Not being one for getting up early to do anything to my hair or face, I've been sticking to a simple and easy low ponytail for my hair. It keeps me from looking like a complete slob; although I could still probably use a hairbrush.

CATCH UP

jalapeño mac & cheese / coconut almond granola

brunch @ helser's on alberta / syntax homework

a soothing reminder @ TOC / more mac and cheese

view from a parking garage / mmm and h&m collab lucite wedges

If you follow me on Instagram already, it might seem like all I do is cook and eat (my boyfriend and I are working on trying every mac & cheese recipe we can; if you've got a good one send it my way), but I also do homework, try on shoes, and park in garages. So, there's that.

I didn't end up getting the boots.

DREAM LIVES

Photos by Brian Ferry

Beautiful photographs of Lauri Kranz's Edible Gardens in LA. I love Brian Ferry's work. These photos make half of me want to become a small scale farmer, working the land and being surrounded by plants in some remote location away from city life and people. The other half of me just wants to sit around on a couch with ice cream and pizza watching trashy TV shows and movies all day. Pretty distinct aspirations but at least both scenarios include having a dog.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

TABLEOFCONTENTS.US

A perfectly curated little shop called Table of Contents just popped in Portland's Chinatown. On Friday, at their opening reception I got to fawn over the great selection of clothes, accessories, objects and printed matter. They carry Slow and Steady Wins the Race, Correll Correll, Comme des Garçons, Henrik Vibskov, Tess Giberson, Opening Ceremony and so much more. The space is beautiful as well- bright, white, with marble counter tops and a giant mirror.

ACID PALM

JF & Son Menswear Summer 2012

A little late to the party, but I'm a huge fan of JF & Son's menswear collab with artist Travess Smalley. Somehow as someone who only wears prints once in a blue moon, I am attracted to the most trippy prints. Unisex possibilities?

TARGET TEE, THRIFTED DRESS

An outtake from this summer. On Friday it started raining again and I already miss the light.

DRIES PLEASE

Dries van Noten SS13

The only show I make a point of checking during Fashion Week that matters. Social media keeps me up to date on everything else I'm not missing in the meantime.
