ÂME DEBOUT

(photos by Mark Ho-Kane, Âme Debout Cy sweater)

How refreshing to see a slow knitwear line, hand-knit in the US and made from responsibly produced wool. Lately I feel too fatigued by the constant cycle of fashion, especially the fast fashion that ends up trickling down into distilled trends. Trends bore me. What excites me is a brand emerging like Âme Debout, something slow, thoughtful, practiced. It feels much more "now" than the latest off the runway.

I wish there would be more people who value well-thought design, so that there would be more people supporting designers who create well-thought products. It's a wonderful idea, but in the face of practicality and need for instant gratification, consumers would rather buy cheap and fast.

Finally someone with some sense... sums up my philosophy as well... very refreshing to be assured of some collective consciousness...
It amazes me that people still fall into the consumption cycle... learned helplessness... it relieves me that handmade brands perpetuate fashion with meaning... ethos... resilience...makes for a much more satisfied consumer... imo...

Personally I handmake and sew all my clothes... been sewing for a good 10+ years... recently started a brand... haven't bought anything RTW in ages, been so long that it is hard to even remember. Anyways... the empowerment of breaking away from cheap consumer culture is so gratifying... I wish more of the population would catch on to the feeling...

I recommend these articles from The Coletterie...:

http://www.coletterie.com/books/overdressed-a-conversation-with-author-elizabeth-cline
Very good articles... perhaps in the same breadth as this post...

Also, I noticed you have taken a liking to knitting... have you ever heard of Kaffe Fassett? You must! He has some wonderful knitting books... you may take a liking... I own so much of his fabrics... planning to sew a lot of dresses from them with my own due blog posts.

I like these sweaters. I also like your thoughts on spending time making things well...I don't often think about this because our world is so catered to mass production and instant gratification...and this applies to fashion as well. Your words make me realize I need to take time to appreciate the craft in things.

Your space, meaning your room, always seems really decluttered and simplistic. As a person who is basically interested in everything and hoards even little pieces of paper with words scribbled on them in case they bring "inspiration" later, what's a good piece of advice for decluttering? Esp. when it comes to clothing, cause tbh I only wear 1/3 of what I own consistently...love your aesthetic btw. keep it up please!!!

So right on with your commentary. The best pieces are timeless

well said. very refreshing. it may sound silly but the pace of trends are "exhausting" physically and overstimulating the senses.

Camille, I couldn't agree more. I've come to a point where I'm so keen on just streamlining my wardrobe for my future career, but it's incredibly difficult trying to guess whether I should invest in certain pieces. Fashion really is exhausting, and since fashion blogs exploded, I feel like the pace is so fast it's tiring. I can't keep up with some of these girls. I swear they never wear the same thing twice, and I can't relate since I need versatility and inspiration on how to pair and match differently. That is going to be almost everyone's predicament as a reader. I think the point you brought up, in sourcing out well made pieces that suite your personal style and make you happy, are really the key to satisfaction in the wardrobe department. [Sorry I went on a huge ramble there, but I just read Opinion Slaves post on Repetitive Blogging, and I couldn't help but relate it to your insight.]

There is such a strong need for slow fashion, I'm happy to see other bloggers lauding it as much as I do!! What a fabulous brand.
