the puff skirts (pt. 1)

while i was at the fabric store yesterday, looking for some red and black satin recreate the look of the skirts at the spring miu miu collection, i came across a linen fabric in khaki and brown that reminded me a lot of isabel marant's spring collection.

elle.com
having lusted for this particular skirt for a long while now, i hastily bought half a yard of both colors. this morning i got out the fabric and began sewing. the end result was these two skirts.

they each took about two hours to make, and are basically just tube of fabric with elastic sewn into the waistband. the dark brown skirt has a thicker elastic in the waistband which creates a more 'poufy' effect.

however, after a reader commented on being unsure of how to wear such skirts, i realised that i was at a loss of how to wear them as well. so i turned to the collection that inspired this skirt for inspiration on how to wear it.

elle.com
i took the color palette of khaki, brown, black and forest green and devised several looks. i even took inspiration from the use of semi-sheer socks paired with tough, strappy sandals.

first i started with the brown skirt, pairing it with a black american apparel raglan, a tan scarf and a belt, which i twisted in a similar way as the runway look.

i tried pairing it with mossy green blazer, but didn't really like the look of it, so i swapped the blazer for my khaki parka.

with the khaki skirt, i decided the tie in a little green, so i wore an olive green (unfortunately it photographed a bit more brown than green) wool sweater with it.

oh, and i haven't forgotten about the miu miu-esque skirts i have yet to make. i just need to buy a smaller needle so that i don't ruin the satin by putting holes in it everywhere. i will work on them this week!

THAT is absolutely amazing! I am so jealous; this really makes me want to pull out my sewing machine, but I doubt much will come from it.

I love how versatile all the looks are. Perfect for fall, spring, and maybe even winter.

They look amazing. I really like the puffy skirt shape but wasn't sure if I should make one because I'd probably not get alot of work out of a satin-y shiny one. I never thought of making them in heavier fabrics! Thanks, you've certainly inspired me.
Love the outfits you've put together too!

the recreation of the runway look is very inspiring. u did an incredible job making the skirts & i like how u nailed the styling.

i also think the pairing of it with the parka is a much stronger look than with the jacket

Hi Camille! I just looked over your whole blog and am in love with your style and posts. You have such a nice eye for simple but very cool looks!

I LOVE these skirts, is there any way I could pay you to make one like this for me cause I have no hope in being able to sew one for myself! Last time I tried to sew I think I managed to break the crazy sewing machine. If you're too busy of course I understand :)

Keep up the amazing blogging!!!

i am in LOVE with the skirts you made. i've been searching for skirts like those for quite a long time now. i'm a student and full-time mom, so i definitely can't afford the designer ones. i would be completely ecstatic if you could possibly make me one [or two!]. if not, it's completely cool. please let me know. thanks. lovely day to you.
